Seeing the title of my entry, you may think that may be IBM or another big US tech company is going to start the biggest call center in India. No, this call center not going to be set by a foreign company. Even, no Indian tech company is going to do it. Instead, Indian Railways is going to build the largest call center in India. Details are still very sketchy and I could not find anything in the website of this government organization. Indian Railways is doing it to change its traditional image of being not so consumer friendly.
Railway is the major means of transport in India and I am quoting from the website of Indian Railway about the contribution of railway in the country:
"Railways traverse through the length and breadth of the country covering 63,140 route kms as on 31.3.2002, comprising broad gauge (45,099 kms), meter gauge (14,776 kms) and narrow gauge (3,265 kms). As the principal constituent of the nation’s transport system, Indian Railways own a fleet of 2,16,717 wagons (units), 39,236 coaches and 7,739 number of locomotives and manage to run 14,444 trains daily, including about 8,702 passenger trains. They carry more than a million tonne of freight traffic and about 14 million passengers covering 6,856 number of stations daily."
Indian Railways carry nearly 5 billion passengers and 350 million tonnes of freight every year. Thus, you can easily understand the need of a huge call center. PK Goyal, Executive Director of Indian Railway Catering and Tourism Corporation, recently said,"Regional centres will be set up in Delhi, Mumbai, Kolkata and Chennai. The call centres will have a unique number and people from all over the country can make use of it." Selling train tickets, tourism packages and carrying out hotel bookings will be among the major activities of this call center.
As soon, I can get more information about this call center, I am going to cover it in this blog. I know millions of passengers will get happy when they can get information from the new call center.
