![]() There was a time when the sun never set in the British Empire and India was its jewel in the crown. The British attacked and captured India mainly for doing business and they did good business at the expense of Indian subcontinent people for nearly two centuries until 1947 when India and Pakistan became independent from British rule. Now, again, there is a huge opportunity for doing business in India as the Indian economy is flourishing with continuous high economic growth. However, according to a report from MPs in the Trade and Industry Committee in British Parliament, British companies seem to have failed to comprehend the enormous market opportunity of India. The report states that most British companies see India as a place that can provide cheap labor not as an emerging market.
UK is India's fourth largest trading partner but investment of UK companies in India is still not very significant. This report calls on the British businessmen to take the market opportunities of India more seriously. On the other hand, many businessmen feel that they have good understanding of the opportunities in India but they lack support from their government.
