Last month (June 2006) has been a good month for GSM operators of India as they saw 3.2 millions subscribers. I just found a report in Reuters about it and Reuters got figure from The Cellular Operators' Association. The growth is impressive and there is still huge room for growth in India. I am now writing about the exponential growth of Indian mobile phone industry in the beginning of every month.
There are mainly two factors contributing behind it: India has a population of over 1 billion and because of low teledensity the market has enough room for growth for many more months to come. Secondly, India has now perhaps the lowest call rate in the world- less than 2 US cent a minute. So, mobile phone is now becoming more and more affordable to the common people. Last month, most of the major mobile phone operators saw good growth in new users. Based on the Reuters report I am giving you some statistics regarding new users added by the GSM operators:
Bharat Sanchar Nigam Ltd.- 0.3 million
Bharti Airtel- 1.2 million
Hutchison Essar Telecom Ltd.- 0.8 million
Reliance- 0.16 million
Reliance is mainly a CDMA player with a small GSM unit. So, it is natural that the company added smaller number of new users compared to other GSM operators. Within a few days, we will see the figure of CDMA based mobile phones in June 2006 and I am sure it will have a healthy growth figure too.
