You may often hear that India has emerged as an IT superpower but you may never hear that India is far behind than the developed world in digitization of its media. Of course, India is not a rich country and that is why Indian government could not allocate money for digitization until now. Perhaps, the time has come for a change as I read a report in the Financial Express titled, "Between the lines, it’s Rs 6k cr for media to go digital". Indian government is investing more than $1 billion for this. I am quoting from the report:
"Digitisation of media industry primarily involve conversion of analogue system of transmission and user sets (mobile, TV, cable, etc) to digital sets (Hi-definition TV, digital cable, mobile telephony and film transmission), thereby increasing bandwidth, superior sound and picture quality, and several value-added services.
China is currently digitising its cable and TV services in four-stages at an estimated investment of Rs 4,800-Rs 5,500 crore."
It is expected that India will be able to digitize its media completely by 2015. Thus Indians will enjoy HDTV but after 9 years. I feel that Indian government should reduce the time by 5 years. Media is already a big business in India and India earns a lot of foreign exchange through its film industry and TV channels. So, modernization will contribute in increasing the revenue.
Do you agree with me?
