![]() This is interesting. IT and Communications Minister Dayanidhi Maran has viewed that after 2007, India will not need to import mobile phones as big names in mobile phone industry like Nokia and Motorola have realized the potential of Indian market. Nokia has already stated manufacturing mobile phone sets in India and 2 million sets are now coming out from its production facility in India. After a few months, Motorola is going to start its production and it will produce 1.3 million of mobile phone sets every month. So, naturally, the need for importing mobile phone sets will vanish and India will be able to save a lot of foreign exchange.
I don't think that import will totally stop. Some rich people will still want to buy flashy and expensive sets but majority of the people will go for made in India sets. Even, made in India sets will be exported in neighboring countries too.
Another good news for the Indian economy.
