![]() Often we see news reports about high economic growth achieved by India in the recent years. However, to sustain economic growth, increase in production of power is a must but it seems that India is falling behind in this race. In the website of Indian Ministry of Power I found this:
"The Ministry of Power has set a goal - Mission 2012: Power for All.
A comprehensive Blueprint for Power Sector development has been prepared encompassing an integrated strategy for the sector development with following objectives:-
- Sufficient power to achieve GDP growth rate of 8%
- Reliable of power
- Quality power
- Optimum power cost
- Commercial viability of power industry
- Power for all"
It sounds very nice to hear but the reality is completely different. I am quoting from a report of Mumbai Mirror:
"The country’s western region experienced the an unprecedented power deficit of 17 per cent against an all-India power deficit level of 10.7 per cent in April-May 2006, forcing it to cut its industrial production by over 30 per cent, according to an analysis carried out by Assocham."
Actually, the national average for India in terms of deficit of power has increased to 10.7 % from 8.8% for April-May 2005. With the existing power deficit, Indian government is going for expansion of electricity facility for new rural areas that will make the matter even worse. Well, the only solution seems to be making huge investment in the power sector.
