In the west, spirituality is already a big business. Life is getting more sophisticated, rich, luxurious and technology oriented. So, spirituality seems to be the best way for many people to get some comfort in a highly urbanized and modern lifestyle. So, when you open television you can find numerous television channels on religion and spirituality. Now it is India's turn to take shelter to spiritualism. The continuous economic growth is increasing the number of flourishing middle class people who have a very comfortable urban lifestyle.
I do not like to ridicule the growing interest of the Indian people of spiritualism but I am not a big fan of passive spiritualism either. I feel that it is just another way of making us passive audience instead of actively doing something. We do not play any sports anymore but we spend many hours for watching football, cricket, baseball or basketball. We spend our time and money and sometimes suffer even heart attack for our favorite players and teams. The same way, many people do not care to actively think and seek spiritualism but like to watch it in television with comfort. Hinduism and Buddhism are two great religions originated in India and both of the religions are based on philosophy and spiritualism. They encourage their followers to seek salvation actively. I would urge the people behind these TV channels to encourage people to actively seek the truth and meaning of life not just listen to some lectures passively.
Why there is such a growth in spiritualism in a tech dominated world? Are not technology and spiritualism two opposite things? I will try to find some answers in the next entry of my blog.
