One of the major accusations against cricket is that it takes a long time to finish a cricket match. If it is a test match then it takes 5 days. Even one day matches need 8 hours. That is perhaps why cricket is failing to increase its popularity outside of South Asia. While cricket is now considered to be a like religion in Bangladesh, India, Pakistan and Sri Lanka, the game is losing base in other parts of the world- especially in England and the West Indies. We are now in a modern life where watching a game for 8 hours means losing a working day. That is why I feel that Twenty20 version of the game has a huge commercial prospect. A Twenty20 match ends inside 3 hours and that is the matches can be easily played in the afternoon or evening.
India has now agreed to promote Twenty20. Until now, BCCI had some reservations about Twenty20. Next year, ICC is going to organize Twenty20 World Cup in South Africa and I am sure that it will become a huge marketing success for ICC. What I like to see is that ICC tries to promote Twenty20 in Asia, Europe and America.
