10,000 megawatts through Wind Power: Is it Possible?
With the rising price of oil, alternative energy sources like wind power is getting more and more relevant for many countries in the world. Countries like India and China are now finding increasingly difficult to meet the growing energy demand. Especially, India is now deeply worried about it. So, India is taking alternative energy very seriously and I could see today that India is planning to double its wind power generation by 2007. Right now, India has the wind power electricity production of  5,340 megawatts. Indian government wants to see that by 2007, the capacity reaches to 10,000 megawatts.
Producing 10,000  megawatts of electricity by wind power is not a matter of joke. Indian government has arranged some tax cuts to make investment in this field attractive. Indian government is optimistic that the tax break on investment in this sector will yield good result. Recently, India saw a healthy growth in this sector as nearly 2,000 MW of production capacity has been added in 2005. Right now, Indian production of electricity is 120,000 megawatts of power and this is not enough. In fact, this is 12% short of the demand. If India wants to sustain economic growth then it needs power, more power. India is now the fourth largest country in terms of generation of wind power.
It would be interesting for us to observe whether India can really generate 10,000 megawatts of power through wind power by 2007. I guess that India should liberalize its power sector more and encourage foreign investors to invest.

India's target to generate 10,000MW of wind power energy by the year 2007 does not seem to be such an impossible task. Unlike thermal and hydel power plants, wind power plants are easy to set up with minimal infrastructural requirements. India has got technical manpower and vast land areas necessary for wind power generation. Already a number of foreign investors are collaborating for narrowing the deficit in power generation.
