A few weeks ago, Interbrand and BusinessWeek jointly produced a report Best Global Brands 2006 in which they the top 100 brand names. Coca-Cola was the top brand according to this report. Google has made significant improvement. 51% of these 100 companies originated in US. What was so astonishing for me was that there was not a single Indian brand. India has one of the largest economies in the world but India does not have one of top brands.
This shows that Indian companies have not become matured enough and India has some way to go. Well, the main problem seems to be that Indian government has not carried out enough economic reforms for private sector to flourish. For example, foreign companies are often unhappy with labor unrest in India. On the other hand, I feel that the top management of most Indian companies lacks the vision to go for international expansion. May be they do not want to upset their share holders by investing too much in foreign expansions. Or may be, they do not want to take too much risk. TATA, Reliance, Infosys- these companies surely have every potential to become leading brands. I am optimistic about these companies. I am hopeful that within 10-15 years at least one of them will emerge as one of the top global brands.
For the moment, the only consolation for India is that in the list of top 100 global brands, China has none either.
