![]() India's biggest challenge to sustain high economic growth is fuel. Yes, Indian government is now finding it in a tough position to meet the rowing demand of power in the country. The price of oil in the international market has remained very high for many months now. That is why alternative energy sources like biodiesel, have become the talking point. I am very happy that Indian government has allocated 500 million rupees (US$10.7 million) for increasing the production of jatropha. Jatropha is a bushy plant that can be used in producing biodiesel.
Fortunately, Indian President A.P.J. Abdul Kalam is a passionate supporter of biodiesel and this is really a good blessing for the alternative energy industry in India. Jatropha is already produced in several states in India. It is often considered to be a profitable crop. The government support will encourage many farmers to increase production of jatropha. I wish that Indian government gives more emphasis on the production of biodiesel.
