Unlike most people in South Asia, I am a big fan of football/soccer. I always dream that football will become more popular than cricket in Bangladesh, India, Pakistan and Sri Lanka. For making football more attractive, professionalism is needed and I guess that Indian football players have scored a vial point in this regard. Recently, some top players in India had formed Football Players' Association (FPA) of India. Baichung Bhutia took the main initiative and other senior players supported him. The main goal of this association is to ensure a good environment for the football players in India. I am quoting from a report of The Hindu:
"The FPA, as the first registered footballers' body in the country, is borne out of the need to give the football players in India a conducive environment. The body in principle would be a "complementary arm of the national and the state federations,'' said Bhutia.
"We would like to be a part of the progress and development of soccer in the country,'' he added. The former national captain said that it would be nice if the national federation and the state associations involve FPA during team selection process. We will have a first hand knowledge of the players and would be able to give valuable inputs during the team selection process,'' he said."
I just wish that FPA gets support from the Indian government. This is clearly a right direction in the development of Indian football. World Cup 2006 crated a huge enthusiasm among Indian people about football.
