It is nice to see that Thailand is considering the idea of doing business in North Eastern part of India. This part is often considered as a neglected part of India because the 7 states of this area are plagued with poverty and insurgency. Thawatchai Sophastienphong, Inspector General of Thailand's ministry of commerce has come to the state of Assam with a Thai delegation to explore the prospects of investing in North Eastern part of India. I am quoting from a report of Monsters and Critics :
"The visiting Thai officials met leading entrepreneurs and Assam government authorities to work out modalities for setting up businesses in the state.
'We are willing to open a trade centre in Assam to boost bilateral business,' the Thai official said.
'Thailand and India's northeast have some similarities in terms of age-old cultural links and hence this region is attracting us.'
The volume of trade between India and Thailand was pegged at $2.8 billion last year."
Thai businessmen are interested to invest in the tourism sector. Assam is ideal for tourism but lacks infrastructure. Even a Thai company is interested to build a private airport in Assam. For Assam, this is good news. The state seriously needs foreign investment to generate employment. Assam is very rich in natural resources. I really hope that Thai businessmen invest here. Geographically, Assam is close to Thailand too.
