Orange playing Hide and Seek with Sending Jobs to India?
This is an interesting news item. Orange is going to recruit 300 call center workers without cutting any job in UK. Normally, western companies send their call center jobs to India to save money and this has created a lot of bitterness in among many people in Europe and North America. So, when I saw the title 'Orange closes UK call centre, recruits in India' in a website, my first reaction was that Orange was going to terminate a lot of jobs in UK. However, then I noticed the sub heading of this report, 'Not technically cutting any UK jobs though...'. However, Orange is closing two call centers in UK and has given the employees the option to relocate themselves in other call centers in UK.

So, technically, no job is going to be lost in UK. However, it is a reality that not all workers will want to leave their area and settle in another place. So, some jobs will be lost after all. I am quoting from a report published in Cellular-News:
" Orange UK has announced plans to close two of its UK call centers, leading to potential redundancies for up to 1,000 staff. The rational is the closure of a half-used building and all staff have been offered replacement positions at other call centers. Orange has denied that the closures are part of a plan to outsource more work to its Indian call centers, which is has operated since 2004.
Nonetheless, the Communication Workers Union accused Orange of outsourcing the jobs to India and condemned the company's decision to close the Peterlee and Solihull call centres. CWU organiser Lynne Browne said "These staff members have a considerable length of service and have helped the company establish its market share. They are now being repaid by Orange with upheaval, disregard and poor career prospects."
Getting confused? I have become some! So, we have to wait a bit to understand the whole matter. I just hope that Oranges bosses come out and explain the whole matter. Sending jobs to India is a common practice now for western companies. It is happening on a daily basis. Even many UK companies have done it too. However, playing hide and seek about this matter is not a good idea.
What do you think about it?
