Just one hundred years ago, many people in Europe and US believed that the rest of the world (mainly Asia and Africa) are uncivilized and it was the white man's burden to civilize them. The British poet Rudyard Kipling even wrote a poem titled "The White Man's Burden" in which he justified this theory. If I am not wrong, some people in the west still have this racist attitude (white supremacy). I wonder if Kipling could ever see in his wildest nightmare that after 100 years, Asian workers would contribute so much in the economies of UK and USA. It seems that US and UK students are now starting to get tuition from teachers in India by Internet. The number of students doing this is not many but it is gradually emerging as a popular trend in UK.
The idea is quite simple and a report of Hindustan Times stated it very clearly:
"In the latest example of growing online interaction between Britain and India, British pupils are paying nearly 10 pounds an hour for online tuition on various subjects from teachers based in India.
More than 3,000 pupils have been receiving such one-to-one tuition using Internet telephony from TutorVista, a company based in Bangalore. It reportedly employs teachers who work in shifts.
While such services have been welcomed by many pupils and their parents, there is growing concern among British education experts on university students buying essays and course assignments from online sites, some of them also based in India."
I visited the website of TutorVista and I was impressed by the media covergae that the company has managed to get so far. The idea of free trial was great too:
"We believe that you will find TutorVista's online tutoring highly effective and convenient. Try us out for one free hour with no strings attached - you don't even need to give us your credit card to start the free trial. At the end of the free trial, you can buy additional tutoring hours at $19.99 an hour or sign up for the unlimited tutoring option for a flat price of $99.99 a month!"
Getting one to one service in US and UK is very expensive. Naturally, TutorVista will attract many more students in the coming days. There are many highly educated persons in India who cannot earn decent amount of money by using their knowledge. That is why, companies like TutorVista will shine. It is a win-win situation for the US and UK students, Indian teachers and the service providers. We now live in an age of competition. Everyone wants to do better in the west. So, the burden is perhaps going to shift from the white man to the brown man. It is now brown man's barden to provide quality education to the white man's children. I wonder what Kiping would write now if he were alive.

New York Times last week published an excellent report on outsourcing of online tutoring: Hello, India? I Need Help With My Math. Steve Lohr wrote this report and it is clear that he did some good research for it.... [Read More]
