Chinese Industrial Park in West Bengal: Good or Bad?
China and India are two neighboring countries but bilateral trade has never been something to cheer. Things are changing these days and the amount of bilateral trade between the two countries is increasing rapidly. I am happy to see that Chinese companies are now getting eager to invest in India. Jiangsu Overseas Group Corporation of Nanjing of China is now interested to set up an industrial park in Indian state of West Bengal. West Bengal is situated in a strategic position. It is the to the North Eastern part of India. On the other hand, it has borders with Bangladesh, Nepal and Bhutan. So, if Jiangsu Overseas Group Corporation of Nanjing can set up an industrial park here then they can cover a vast market.

The corporation has already signed an expression of interest (EoI) with the state government of West Bengal. I am quoting from a report of India eNews:
State Industry Department Principal Secretary Sabyasachi Sen told reporters here that the Chinese corporation had sought 250 acres of land for setting up the park, which would house only companies from Nanjing province.

The official said that a three-member Chinese delegation had visited Haldia in East Midnapore district and Rajarhat near Kolkata. The corporation was in favour of the former location due to its proximity to a port, he added.

Sen said the industrial park might be converted subsequently into a special economic zone (SEZ).”

Let’s hope that Chinese companies can set up with the industrial park without any problem. It will create some jobs in West Bengal. On the other hand, West Bengal government should be careful about selecting the land for the park. In the recent months, many farmers in the state are unhappy as their fertile land is being taken by the government for industrial projects. In this state, most people depend on farming for their livelihood. So, the government should be very careful while acquiring land.
