Students come to USA from all over the world. It seems that Indian students form the largest group in US among foreign students. According U.S. Ambassador David Mulford in India, there are now nearly 80,000 Indian students studying in India. The Hindu reported:
“Talking about the education exchanges between the two countries, Mr. Mulford said while there were very few American students in India there were over 80,000 Indian students in America, the largest contingent from any country. As part of its initiative towards promoting foreign visitors to the U.S., attention would be paid to reduce the delays that currently plague visa processing for students and business people.”
Here are five reasons why so many Indian students come to US to study.
- US universities are among the best in the world. So, naturally Indian students try to come to US and study here. Compared to US universities, Indian universities are far behind in terms of educational facilities.
- Indian universities are not ideal for carrying out world class research. So, many Indian scholars try to go to US for research and higher studies. For example, Indian universities do not have good libraries and laboratories. Research grants are not available for most of the students of either in India. On the other hand, US universities have these facilties in the best possible way.
- USA is perhaps the richest country in the world and here earning money is much easier than India. So, earning money is another motivational factor to go to USA.
- Many Indians live in USA now and they often help their relatives in India to come to US and study. This is common among Indian people as family bond is very strong.
- A degree from US universities is often valued very highly in India. If you have a degree from US, you are bound to get good jobs and with a decent salary. So, many Indian students come to US thinking of a bright career.
So, now you can understand the reasons why there are so many Indian students in US. For the same reasons perhaps, there are so few US students coming to India to study. US students are mainly interested about Indian languages and they come to India to study Indian languages.
