![]() I really wish that it was a funny story not a tragic one. Being a poor person in the third world countries is a curse but it seems that now being an elephant is a even bigger curse in India. I just finished reading a touching report titled ‘India's elephants pay high price for their honors’ in IHT. I would strongly recommend you to read the report. In the report, Anand Giridharadas has written about the tragic death of an elephant called Lakshmi.
Now a days, in Mumbai, many people like to have elephants for different occasions. Using elephants in marriage ceremony has become a popular fashion among middle class and rich people in the city. Mumbai does not have any elephant. So, some greedy people capture them from eastern Indian states like Bihar or Assam and then bring the elephants to the city of Mumbai, the richest Indian city. After that, the elephants have to suffer every abuse until they die. Fortunately or unfortunately, Lakshmi died after being hit by a vehicle whose driver was drunk.
The irony is that according to Hinduism, elephant is one of the most sacred animals. I really wish that Indian government becomes very strict against abuse of animals- especially elephants.
