Flood is nothing new in India. For many parts of the country, it is an annual event and people have got adjusted at to some extent to live with floods. However, the flood of this year seems to be very devastating in nature. I wrote about the devastation of flood in the western Indian state of Rajasthan a few days ago. Now, flood has taken a devastating turn in the Eastern state of Orissa. To give you an idea about the devastation caused by the flood here, I am quoting from a report of Monsters and Critics.com:
“Over two million people were displaced as the Mahanadi River breached its banks and destroyed houses and crops in 4,000 villages across 12 districts in the eastern Orissa state, the CNN-IBN TV network reported.
Villagers had taken shelter on roof-tops in villages in the four worst-affected districts of Kendrapara, Cuttack, Puri and Jagatsinghpur, after their belongings and cattle were swept away by floods following the torrential rains that began last week.”
Next on the list perhaps is the northern state of Jammu and Kashmir. This year, nearly half of the 28 Indian states have been affected more or less by flood. The death tool will soon pass 1,000. The economic impact of this flood will be too much to bear for some of the Indian states. I hope that Indian central government comes forward with a generous hand to the affected people.
