![]() No, India does not want to be the champion of 2010 Hockey World Cup. The performance of Indian national team has consistently been so bad for the last few years that hardly anyone expects them to become world champion in near future. India wants to host 2010 event. I am quoting from a report of DNA India:
“Former champions India hope to make up for their deteriorating field hockey standards by hosting the World Cup in 2010, an official said on Thursday.
"We are very keen to host the next World Cup because it will give the sport a boost in the country,"Indian Hockey Federation secretary K. Jothikumaran said.
The bid follows India's disastrous campaign in the ongoing World Cup in Monchengladbach, Germany where the eight-time Olympic champions lost four of their five league matches and drew one.”
In fact, in group B, India could secure the unenvious last position. So, Indian Hockey Federation should be more concerned about improving the standard of hockey in India. Instead, Indian Hockey Federation bosses are eager to host this tournament as it would enrich their coffer. Then big companies and media houses will sponsor the event.
This is the problem with Indian sports today. Hardly anyone cares to see India shine in the sports events.
