One Million People Homeless: Who Should Care?
Monsoon is gradually coming to an end but this time it affected India with floods. It seems that the eastern state of Orissa has been worst hit by the flood and thousands of people have been suffering. Continuous rain has made their life miserable and continuous rain has made the work of the relief workers very difficult. It is the duty of the government to ensure that the people do not suffer too much. On the other hand, some voluntary originations are trying with their limited capacity to support the flood affected people.

I found a very sad picture of the condition in a Reuters report:
“But days after floodwaters submerged hundreds of villages in 12 of Orissa's 30 districts, authorities have failed to reach around one million people who remain stranded without shelter, food and medicines, say charities.

"People are still desperately asking for dry food and drinking water and infants are almost starving due to non-supply of baby food," said Archarya Kalyan Anand of Sarvoday Rahat Abhiyan, a charity distributing food and medicine in Kendrapara district, 80 km (50 miles) east of the state capital Bhubaneswar.

"The administration is still in the wilderness and yet to reach some of the worst-hit villages."

Authorities deny they have failed to deal with the disaster, saying relief efforts had initially been hampered due to continuous rain.

"I do admit some voluntary organisations have reached the affected villages prior to government agencies, but it does not mean the government has failed to discharge its responsibilities," said Jagadananda Panda, a top relief official.”

Frankly, I am not interested to know about who is to blame for what. All I realize is that the condition of the flood affected people is becoming desperate with each passing day. Flood is an almost annual affair for India and it is not the first time that the country is dealing with a terrible flood. So, the officials of both the state government and the central government should become more skilled in dealing with such situations.
