Toyota’s Big Mistake in Indian Market
Toyota may be doing well in the world market but its performance in India is not up to the mark. The only reason for Toyota not flourishing in India is the fact that Toyota bosses failed to adjust with the changing market condition in India. Indian auto industry is growing very fast now but most people are interested to buy inexpensive cars. Toyota failed to address this market segment and it did not help the company in India all.
Good thing is that now Toyota bosses have realized this matter and decided to introduce a small and inexpensive car just for the Indian market. I am quoting from a report of Moneycontrol.com:
“In 18 months' time, Toyota will roll out a small car, made in India. It's putting up a plant that will make 1.5 lakh small cars a year. Sources say the car will sell for Rs 4.5-6 lakh. Toyota has designed this car specifically for India. It has developed a prototype, and will modify its design at the new plant.
Toyota's small car is key to its Indian plans. It aims to corner 10% of the market or 2 lakh cars in the next 4 years.”
Well, I am not still so convinced about the success of Toyota. The price tag of Rs 4.5-6 lakh does not exactly fall into the inexpensive segment. Indian middle class is flourishing and they surely will look for inexpensive models. I wish that Toyota bosses could spend more time thinking about India.

Peter,
Thanks for your comment. You are right. I will try to follow your advice. As for the term 'lakh'- it means 100,000.

It's also a good idea to point out that 1000 $ = @45,000 Rs. So 4.5 Lakh = @10,000 $. Thats a bit on the high side for most Indians looking for a car. Something around 7500$ would make a lot of people happy.
