I have covered in depth the recent controversy that arose with the broadcasting of the documentary The Data Theft Scandal by UK’s Channel 4. If you remember, that time Indian IT leaders tried to prove that it was a conspiracy by vested quarters against Indian outsourcing industry. I clearly stated that such a strategy would do India no good. I am happy that Indian government officials have understood this reality and Indian government is going to change its IT Act 2000 to fight against data theft in a better way.
Indian Prime Minister visited UK last week and there the British businessmen expressed their concern about data theft in India. Manmohan Singh assured them of taking some concrete actions about this matter. I am happy that he acted very quickly. Times of India reported:
“The decision at the Union Cabinet's meeting follows Prime Minister Manmohan Singh's assurance to investors abroad that India was sensitive to their concerns about data theft and would plug the loopholes.
"Concerns have been raised both within the country as well as by the customers abroad regarding adequacy of data protection and privacy laws in the country," Parliamentary Affairs Minister P R Dasmunsi said, while briefing reporters on the Cabinet meeting.”
Of course, I am very happy to read this news in Times of India. However, I like to see that Indian government allocates some resources to train up the police force in this field. The police personnel need to be skilled in understanding and fighting this kind of crime that involves data theft.
What do you think?
