Education is the backbone of any country but it is neglected by most third world countries. Education for all- is a nice slogan but merely a slogan. Many governments do not care to allocate resources to implement this idea. It seems that India belongs to this group. At least, Education For All (EFA) Development Index of UNESCO suggests it. According to this report, India is in an unenviable rank of 99 out of 125 countries.
China has a much better (43rd) ranking than India. DNA India reported:
“According to the UNESCO’s Global Monitoring Report 2007 on EFA released on Thursday, India’s approach to EFA lacks vision and policy for non-formal education.
According to it, Sub-Saharan Africa and South and West Asia are home to more than three-quarters of out-of-school children, although the latter region halved its number between 1999 and 2004, mainly due to reductions in India.
Yet, India is among the countries with the largest numbers of out-of-school children in 2004. The others are Nigeria, Pakistan, Ethopia and Saudi Arabia.”
I agree with the basic assumption that India lacks vision. Indian decision makers have to understand that economic growth has close relationship with literacy. If India wants to sustain its economic growth then India will have to improve its ranking in this index.
