India: Losing Battle Against Hunger
Indian economy is growing. India is trying for a permanent seat at UN Security Council. Some people like to think India as the next emerging superpower. May be India is indeed the next economic giant. However, it is going to be an economic giant with a huge number of hungry and malnourished children. DNA India reported:
For a country that is exulting over the 8 per cent plus growth of its economy, here’s a rude reality check. India, currently dining on the high table of potential economic superpowers, is rubbing shoulders with several least-developed countries among the hunger hotspots of the world, says the Global Hunger Index, developed by the International Food Policy Research Institute (IFPRI).

India’s score on the index for 2003, the latest year for which data is available, was 25.73, worse than Sudan at 27.20 but better than Burkina Faso (25.80). The index, comprising three indices - child malnutrition, child mortality and estimates of the proportion of people who are calorie deficient - ranks countries on a 100-point scale, with 0 being the best and 100 being the worst. The worst country (Burundi) had an index value of 42.70 and the best (Belarus) had an index value of 1.59.

Well, Indian decision makers are perhaps a little too busy to celebrate the continuous high economic growth. So, they forget to think about the poor children. They have banned child labor and thus they have freed the children. Perhaps, they think that they have done enough. Until Indian government takes substantial measures to improve the life of the poor children, this kind of miserable records will only appear in the media regularly.
