To the rest of the world, India is mostly known as a vegetarian country. In fact, many people in the west think that most Indians are vegetarians. Well, this is not the case any more. Indian economy is growing and economic prosperity is now changing the food habit of Indians. More people are now eating meat than ever before.
According to Hindustan Times:
“According to a nation-wide survey conducted by the National Institute of Nutrition (NIN), Hyderabad, 64 per cent of Indians are non-vegetarians now as compared with 46 per cent in the early 1990s.
India Shining could be one of the reasons the majority of population is polishing off its non-vegetarian plate. With per capita income rising, most families in Delhi, Mumbai, Bangalore and Kolkata prefer eating out. And at the restaurants, they mostly order non-vegetarian dishes.”
This survey shows that Indians are changing their eating pattern. In the short term it may not be bad as more Indians now can afford to eat meat and eating meat in a modest level is not bad for health. However, what is bad is that getting addicted to meat and becoming overweight. Most western countries have this problem. I hope India does not have it in near future.
