It is great to see that Indian economy is shining and more and more people are changing their eating habit and preferring non-vegetarian dishes compared to vegetables. On the other hand, the number of poor people is not decreasing in India and thus more and more people are suffering from malnutrition. Thus, in terms of eating habit, we can see that two Indias are emerging.
If the well off Indians become too much addicted to meat then many Indians will become overweight. Well, in the western countries, underweight is not a problem for most people. With more Indians turning to meat, this will become a common problem for India too. The bad thing is that Indian people are not that much concerned about the matter of overweight like the western people. Indian government is not concerned about it either. However, Indian government has to be totally concerned with the problem of malnutrition.
India has nearly 60 million malnourished children. They are underweight because they cannot get enough food. It will have a serious consequence in future. India has perhaps the youngest population in the world and if India can capitalize on this young population then India will achieve tremendous economic growth. However, with so many malnourished children, India has a major concern ahead.
I wish that Indian decision makers can become more conscious about this problem and give priority to fight against both the problems of overweight and underweight people.
