Indian economy is growing and middle class is flourishing. Now, the number of people with disposable income is growing. In India, infant mortality is high and millions of women suffer from poverty. So, it is interesting to see how Mothercare can expand its business in India. Life Style Extra reported:
“Mothercare PLC may open 100 stores in India in five years, reported the Economic Times citing B Nagesh, managing director and chief executive of Shopper's Stop, Mothercare's exclusive Indian partner.
Mothercare had originally planned 40 stores and it currently has 8 Indian outlets.
The childcare retailer expects to break even in the first year of operations in India, said the report.”
Business is not so good in UK for the company, as it does not have high growth these days. On the other hand, India is a flourishing market for companies like Mothercare. The market for baby products is still not saturated in India and urban families would surely welcome Mothercare stores in their neighborhoods.
This matter again reflects the economic divide of India. On the one hand, some urban families will have Mothercare stores at their disposal, while thousands of infants die every year during birth.
