Polio in India is not going away fully. Eradication of polio seems to be an impossible task for Indian government. So, every year, we can find new cases of polio diseases in India. On the other hand, India is even exporting this disease to the neighboring countries. Why is India failing to win the battle against polio?
- Indian government is not taking this issue seriously enough. In fact, polio is not a priority matter for the Indian decision makers. They are too busy with economic progress.
- Indian government is not using its state machinery effectively to spread the message of polio. Polio is mainly limited to 3-4 of the Indian states- not all over India. So, it is easier for Indian government to use its machinery to motivate people to fight against polio.
- Indian media is not doing enough in this regard. The government should make sure that the TV channels, radio stations and newspapers give proper coverage about polio.
- Many people in India are superstitious and do not want to use medicine. Secondly, many people living in the rural areas are not even aware of the causes and dangers of this disease.
India should fight against polio with more efforts. Otherwise, polio can hurt Indian economy in the coming days. Thousands of children in India are malnourished. Polio would only make the matter worse.
