The Data Theft Scandal: Five Things India Should Do?
Tomorrow is the big day for Indian call center industry. Well, you may call it as Doom Thursday as Channel 4 (of UK) is going to broadcast a documentary titled The Data Theft Scandal in which it is going to expose the vulnerability of data security in India. I have covered this topic in details in my other blog at Know More Media Network, SouthAsiaBiz. It seems that NASSCOM has taken the stance that it is some sort of a conspiracy against the Indian IT success. Well, I beg to differ with NASSCOM President. I feel that the people in Europe or America are always alarmed by any incident of data theft. They will not get any comfort from the claim of NASSCOM leaders that India is a safer place than UK or US in terms of data theft. I am proposing here 5 concrete steps that Indian government and NASSCOM leaders should take:

  1. Indian government should pass new legislatures that would treat data theft from call centers as a highly punishable offence.
  2. It is a reality that most people in India are not aware of the severity of data theft since India has yet to have a high-tech economic system. So, Indian government and NASSCOM should start a motivational campaign among call center workers about the importance of data security.
  3. NASSCOM should arrange special training for the police and the detectives on data security. India needs to have more people skilled in this regard.
  4. Indian media should make programs showing the positive aspects of outsourcing industry. If 10 persons are involved with data theft there are nearly 1 million workers who are working honestly. The media can easily portray this feature.
  5. NASSCOM should try to convince the Indian government to go after the bad guys seriously and bring them to justice. This can assure the foreign companies.

Let us hope for the best. Indian government, NASSCOM and Indian media- all have to play their part now. They have to treat as a national crisis. Indian economy is now shining and Information Technology has played the leading role in making India as an emerging economic power.
