Until now, India is a country of villages. Most people in India live in rural areas even today. However, more and more people are coming to urban areas and the cities are contributing more to the Indian economy. DNA India reported:
“An Assocham paper titled 'Urban India: Growth, Opportunities and Difficulties', revealed that almost 300 million Indians living in major metros and cities would push India's GDP growth to 10 per cent by 2011, from the 2001-level of 60 per cent.
Urban India would emerge as a major epicentre for both domestic economic activities and overseas businesses that would pave the way for higher urban per capita income at Rs 36,000 per annum by 2011, which is a Rs 10,000 jump from the current estimates of Rs 26,000 per annum.”
I am concerned about just one matter. Millions of people in urban India are still very poor and they do not have access to basic facilities. This may cause too much social discrimination and can ultimately endanger the social stability. Most of the time, the media is just focusing on the high economic growth of India. I wish that Indian decision makers could focus more about improving the condition of the common people in the urban areas.
