Indian economy is growing and India needs to import a lot of scrap metal. However, Indian companies sometimes import bad quality scrap metal and it causes danger to the workers. India is now thinking of changing its policy in this regard. Financial Express reported:
“N.K. Gupta, additional director general of foreign trade (DGFT) for the Indian government, told delegates at the Bureau of International Recycling conference in Brussels that India had no plans to curtail its imports of metal scrap, which exceed a value of $1 billion a year.
"We want to allow the import of scrap ... We don't want to curb scrap imports because we need it and we rely on it," said Gupta.”
It is clear that India cannot afford to ban import of scrap metals as Indian economy needs them. However, at the same time, Indian government should be more careful that companies do not import low quality scrap metal. The report also stated:
“Under the new rules that come into force on April 1, 2007, imports of unshredded scrap into India will be permitted only from suppliers who have been registered by the government of India via the DGFT.
………………
The only condition is that scrap may not contain any type of arms, ammunition, mines, shells, cartridges, radioactive contaminated or any other explosive material.”
I am happy that Indian government has taken this decision. It will help the workers a lot and improve the safety standard.
