We hear the term ‘Mother India’ a lot but for some people India is the grandmother. Take the case of nearly half a million people of Indian origin who live in Trinidad and Tobago. They came to this Caribbean country in the 19th and early part of 20th century to work in sugarcane plantations. Their descendents now form 40.3% of the entire population (1.3 million) of the country. They do not speak the Indian language anymore but they are trying to keep Indian culture alive in their life and they want to visit their grandmother India.
I read an excellent report in the Hindustan Times. The report stated:
“Ethnic Indians in Trinidad & Tobago yearn to visit the land of their forefathers, deterred only by the distance and the lack of easy communication between the two countries, said Kamla Persad-Bissessar, Leader of Opposition in Trinidad & Tobago.
Easy travel facilities and direct flights between Trinidad & Tobago and the land of their ancestors will greatly facilitate our visits to India," said Persad-Bissessar.”
Indians are doing well in Trinidad and Tobago and that is why, many of the Indo-Trinidadians can afford to visit India. However, they have to suffer a long trip via London or Paris. If direct flights could be arranged then many Indo-Trinidadians would love to visit grandmother India.
I think that Indian government should take this matter seriously and arrange a weekly directly flight for the Indo-Trinidadians to visit India. Indian government should also arrange special packages at an affordable price for them to visit their grandmother India.
