In my blogs about South Asia and India, I have often written about the city of Bangalore. Bangalore is the heart of Indian success in outsourcing. Many international companies have their offices in Bangalore but Bangalore is yet to become a mega city in India. I guess that the Karnataka Government has come to this realization that Bangalore should have a better image. The best way to catch the media attention is to organize big sporting events. Perhaps, Sony Ericsson International tennis tournament (to be held in February) would help in this regard.
The participation of Serena Williams has created a lot of media attention about the event and about the city of Bangalore. India Times reported:
As a precursor to the 2007 Valentine week, when the KSLTA and the Karnataka Government co-host the Sony Ericsson International tennis, seven-time Grand Slam champion Serena Williams had a special message for her fans. "See you in Bangalore," she said.
In a video message screened at the launch of the $175,000 Tier III tournament, the former world number one, bright smile and chirpy voice, said, "I am working hard on my fitness and I am looking forward to be competing again.
Tennis as a sport is becoming more and more popular in India and I hope fans of all ages will come out to see us play. I've heard a lot about Bangalore and I looking forward to coming to India."
Even the great Serena Williams is now interested about Bangalore! I am sure that the city dwellers of Bangalore will feel very happy to hear this news. This is not good news for Indian tennis sensation Sania Mirza. If Serena comes then all the eyes would be on Serena not on Sania.
