The ascendency of India as an economic world power

I have to admit that this news is shocking to me. Outsourcing is nothing new but 70% jobs is not a small matter either. The shocking thing is that the 70% jobs that we are talking about are in the public sector. This prediction has come from Bill Thomas, head of EDS's European, African and Middle East units.

The Hindu reported:

An estimated 70 per cent of public sector IT jobs in Britain could be moved abroad to cheaper economies like India or China, a top official of a leading IT firm has said.

 

Bill Thomas, head of EDS's European, African and Middle East units, told The Daily Telegraph newspaper that he expected a dramatic change in the public sector IT personnel as former civil servants employed by private sector groups faced the prospect of losing their jobs to so-called off-shoring. The Texas-based EDS is the biggest supplier of IT to the Government.

EDA is not popular in UK now and this prediction will make the company even more unpopular. The labor unions in UK are not happy at all with the prospect of tech jobs being outsourced to India and China.

I have been covering outsourcing in this blog for quite some time now. I feel that outsourcing is an inevitable reality. So, although I am shocked from the prediction of Bill Thomas, I understand that it may happen within a few years.
