One of the most important rivers in Indian is the Ganges. However, it has been long since the river has been polluting and no significant initiative has been taken to solve the problem. From the religious point of view the river has a great importance to the Hindus but even the religious leaders have not taken any notable steps to resolve this big problem.
Here are five of the major sources of pollution:
Industrial Waste
Industrial waste is a major source of pollution in the Ganges. There are different kinds of industries on the banks of the river Gages which dump millions of gallons of industrial wastes which cannot be decomposed or recycled. Needless to say that the growth in Indian economy is only making the matter worse.
Leather Industry
Leather industry is one of the most promising and rising industries in India now. However, the waste materials of this industry are being dumped in to the Ganges which is very unhealthy as those wastes involve chromium and other dangerous elements to a great extent and make the water totally dirty and contaminated.
Human Waste
About 350 million people reside on the banks of Ganges and the waste produced by this huge population plays an important role behind the pollution. All kinds of human wastes of that area are thrown into the water of Ganges.
Untreated Sewage
Sewages from the nearest cities come to the water of the Ganges and pollute its water badly. Sing that water many people fall in to water born diseases. So, it has been a great concern that it is a sacred river but this kind of waste is still being dumped into the Ganges.

Devotees
Many devotees come to this river on the occasion of Khumb Fair, a popular festival arranged on the banks of the river Ganges. During the fair, the river is used by millions of devotes.
These are the major sources which badly affect the water of the river Ganges. So, Indian government and the people from all walks of life should come forward to eradicate this problem and save the important river Ganges.
