Indian car market is growing very fast and it has become one of the most attractive car markets in the world now. Naturally, it is a very competitive market and major auto companies in the world are now in a rat race to get more market share. Last year, Hyundai Motor India filed a complain with The Monopolies and Restrictive Trade Practices Commission (MRTPC) against Maruti-Suzuki India putting huge advertisements claiming that Maruti-Suzuki India cars were the best in the market.
Economic Times wrote:
MSI had come out with full-page advertisements where it had claimed that its products scored highest in parameters of fuel mileage, maintenance costs and the resale value in the passenger car segment. MSI had based its advertisement on studies conducted by a leading private research agency as well as its own used-car outlet ‘TrueValue’.Reacting to it, HMIL had in September 2006, filed a case with MRTPC against MSI’s advertisements, alleging it ‘disparaged’ the company’s products. During the subsequent hearing in November, MSI submitted that it would not publish the disputed advertisement. However, HMIL again filed an additional application alleging that MSI had been continuing its campaign despite the assurance to MRTPC. To this, MSI had contended that posters and pamphlets were outside the purview of HMIL petition.

It is nice to see that the problem has been solved. However, I am sure that there will be more problems of this nature in the coming days as the Indian auto market is becoming more and more attractive for major auto companies in the world.
