The ascendency of India as an economic world power

US based automaker General Motors has recently opened its first design studio in India. The studio has been opened in Bangalore where GM already has a research and development facility. The new studio is expected to help GM designing cars for Indian market. GM has seen an excellent progress in Indian market this year so far. With two compact model cars- Chevrolet Spark and Chevrolet Aveo U-VA, General Motors could attract the Indian consumers. So, General Motors is now trying its best to gain more market share of Indian car market.

International Herald Tribune reported:

"It will give us the ability to design vehicles in India for India to meet the unique needs of our customers across the country," Karl Slym, GM's India head, said in a statement.

The studio, which will initially have about 60 employees, comes at a time when GM is having some success after struggling for years to penetrate the Indian car market.

I think, it is a smart move by General Motors. Though they are still not in the leading automaker in Indian market, GM officials could realize the potential of India’s car market. That is why; they are trying to make their presence visible in India setting up a good infrastructure. General Motors has already become a leading automaker in Chinese market.

General Motors has to cut back on its cost. Outsourcing some of the jobs to India can help GM too.
