Indian Cricket League (ICL): Delhi Jets

Indian Cricket League (ICL) is now a few days away to kick off its first Twenty20 tournament. All the preparations have already been taken and the fans are delighted to experience the first private league of Twenty20 format in India. After India’s victory in Twenty20 world cup, this new format of cricket has received a huge response in India.

The six team tournament fixture has been made public recently. The main attraction of Indian cricket league is its star players from different countries. The tournament will start from November 30 and will conclude through the final match set to be held on 16 December. All the teams will play against each other primarily. Four teams with highest points will make it to the semi final round. Along with star players, some local players will also appear in this tournament. ICL is termed as a rebel cricket league as BCCI has not given its approval to ICL.

Earlier, I wrote about four of the six teams of this tournament. Now, I am going to write about Delhi Jets. The squad includes 19 players in which six are foreign. The foreign players are former Sri Lankan captain Marvan Atapattu, Ireland batsman Niall O'Brien, Pakistani batsman Tofeeq Umer, English wicket keeper Paul Nixon and South African batsman Dale Benkenstein. No doubt, the squad is really very balanced and capable of showing some excellent matches.

Among the local players, Jai Prakash Yadav played for Indian team in ODI cricket. He is an effective all rounder. Though he could not make a big impression in his international career, he has performed consistently in domestic cricket. As a local star cricketer, fans will expect something special from Yadav. Batsmen Mohnish Mishra, Ali Murtaza, Sachin Dholpure etc. may come up with some excellent innings in the competition. However, spinner Abhishek Sharma and Abhinav Bali will have a big role to play with their spin bowling.

Sri Lanka’s recently retired star batsman Marvan Atapattu is now in good form. So, Delhi Jets will expect some good innings from him in the tournament. Interestingly, the squad includes three wicketkeepers including Niall O'Brien from Ireland, Paul Nixon from England and local wicket keeper Dishant Yagnik. Niall O'Brien proved his batting talent in ICC World Cup 2007. Taufeeq Umar is promising opener. I think, he will lead the batting line up of Delhi Jets in the tournament. Paul Nixon has a huge experience that might be crucial for Delhi Jets. South African batsman Dale Benkenstein failed in international cricket but his domestic cricket record is really attractive with 27 first class centuries. I think, the foreign cricketers will lead Delhi Jets and will play a big part for their success.
