Indian Cricket League (ICL): Mumbai Champs

Indian cricket league will begin its first tournament from 30 November. Cricket loving fans are already delighted with the ongoing India vs Pakistan test series 2007. So, ICL Twenty20 competition will increase their excitement. Indian cricket league has already been a much talked issue throughout the cricket world. Though ICL is a private league, the tournament seems to be attractive simply because some of the cricket stars from abroad will appear in this tournament. Moreover, twenty20 format is always very attractive because of lots of fours and sixes within just 20 overs.

There are six city based teams including Chandigarh Lions, Mumbai Champs, Kolkata Tigers, Delhi Jets, Chennai Superstars and Hyderabad Heroes. Here, I am going to write on Mumbai Champs. No doubt, Mumbai Champs will be under focus mainly because of Brian Lara who is likely to captain the side. Mumbai Champs squad includes 19 players in which five are from abroad. Foreign players are considered to be the main strength of Mumbai Champs. The foreign cricketers are former West Indies captain Brian Lara, England opener England, New Zealand’s former batting star Nathan Astle, South African all rounder J Van der Wath and South African fast bowler Nantie Hayward.

Among the local players there are some important players like Robin Morris, Kiran Powar, Dheeraj Jadhav, Ranjeet Kirid, Pushkaraj Joshi etc. Wicket keeper Subhojit Paul does not have enough experience of playing in this level of cricket. Spinner Avinash Yadav and Sridher Iyer will have a big role to play for Mumbai Champs.

Batting seems to be the main strength of a Mumbai Champs. The side includes two quality openers- Vikram Solanki and Nathan Astle. I think, they will open for Mumbai Champs. Brian Lara may come in middle order and will have a big part to play for his side. All rounder Johan van der Wath from South Africa might be a headache for the opposition teams. His excellent bowling as well as effecting batting talent will bring a good balance in the team. South African fast bowler Nantie Hayward appeared for South Africa in both test and OID. I think, he will lead the bowling line up of Mumbai Champs.

Former Indian great Sandip Patil will coach Mumbai Team. He has got many successes in his career. He also has experience in coaching. Now, let us see if he can lead Mumbai Champs to win the ICL twenty20 championship. Here, I am giving the full list of players of Mumbai Champs:
