India 2008: World's Cheapest Car from Tata

In 2006, it was a like a dream- the prospect of a car within 1 lakh (100,000) Indian Rupee. In 2008, it is going to become a reality. In fact, a car of $2,500 from Tata has already caught the attention of everyone in the world car industry. What is amazing is that the cheapest car in the world is coming from an Indian company. Now, it seems that everything is set for the launch of this car and it is coming within two weeks.

AFP wrote:

Ratan Tata, head of the tea-to-steel Tata conglomerate, will unveil the "People's Car" January 10 at a New Delhi auto show that will carry a sticker price of 100,000 rupees, or 2,500 dollars, which some analysts say could revolutionise automobile costs worldwide.

And Tata, which has been on an aggressive overseas expansion drive, is also expected to win its reported two-billion-dollar bid for the British Land Rover and Jaguar brands in January -- putting it in the unusual position of making two prestige cars as well as the world's lowest-cost automobile.

Ratan Tata is hoping that this car will help many middle class families to own a car. He also feels that this car will transform the auto Industry in India and it will increase the safety of people in the street. In India, many people have to use motorcycles and you know that a car is safer than a motorcycle. Well, not everyone shares this kind of optimism with Ratan Tata. The price of a motor cycle is one third of the price of People’s Car. So, it will take quite some time for the world’s cheapest car to become very popular in India.
