ICL: Mithun Chakraborty and Kolkata Tigers

Famous Bengali actor Mithun Chakraborty has bought Indian Cricket League’s Kolkata Tigers team. I saw this news in an Indian TV channel just two hours ago. Indicating his past experience of organizing the Raj Kapoor Trophy in Chembur, Mumbai, the once-superstar of Bollywood claimed himself as a sports lover. Having said that he also admitted, it was not only his love for the sport that led him to buy the Kolkata franchise of ICL, but also he was seeking business interest in the deal. Though he was unwilling to reveal the amount he was going to spend for the deal, the actor hinted the figure would be huge amount.

Earlier, Bollywood star Shah Rukh Khan bought the Indian Premier League’s (IPL) Kolkata franchise and he is now promoting his team extensively in order to attract as many fans as possible. However, Mithun Chakraborty has denied having any competition with Shah Rukh Khan.

Sify.com reported:

"I have always been a sports lover and had organised the Raj Kapoor Trophy in Chembur, Mumbai, for several years where big stars played,” he said. “But it was not just passion that made me buy the team; there is business in it also."

The king of disco dance said: "I am an entertainer and Twenty20 is a fantastic form of entertainment. There is craze and good business in it. So I decided to try my luck."

On whether he wanted to rename the side Bengal Tigers, he said: "I have strongly recommended it. Kolkata is the capital of Bengal, but my side will represent all the people of the state. I have fans in every corner of the state."

Well, I think, ICL has done the right job giving the helm of Kolkata team to someone like Mithun Chakraborty who has huge popularity among the local people. Mithun Chakraborty might have denied having any competition with Shah Rukh Khan but sometimes he may have to face some stiff competition from Shah Rukh Khan. Shah Rukh has gone all the way to promote his team. In the backdrop of ICL-IPL rivalry, now it will be interesting to see a competition between a yesteryear star and a reigning super star. You guess who will win?
