The ascendency of India as an economic world power

The death of a British teenage girl has caused a lot of buzz in the media about Indian tourism sector. Scarlette Eden was murdered last month at Goa. Her body was found at a beach and there was allegation of cover up of the murder from the mother of Scarlette Eden. It created some bitterness between India and Britain. Tourism Secretary Silabhadra Banerjee today said that India was a safe place for the tourists.

Economic Times wrote:

"India is an absolutely safe destination as anywhere else in the world. There is no doubt about that," Banerjee told reporters on the sidelines of the four-day International conference on "Responsible Tourism" here.

All the state governments had much earlier been asked to set up "tourist police", which some states have already put in place, he said.

AT the same report, I found that nearly 5 million tourists visited India in 2007. This is obviously good news for the tourism sector of India. However, at the same time, Indian government should take a close look at the safety of the tourists. The death of Scarlette Eden should be investigates thoroughly and the criminals should be brought to justice as soon as possible.
