The inaugural tournament of Indian Premier League is now going on full swing as the participating teams and their fans are enjoying the fullest of this Twenty20 tournament. However, it has been only one week the tournament has begun, but some serious concerns regarding Indian Premier League are coming up. Recently, the Chief Executive of Cricket Australia, James Sutherland, has raised such a question regarding the tournament. Mr. James Sutherland said that there were not many ways the franchise owners could get the returns of their investment. He pointed out the fact that crowd presence in the stadium was not satisfactory.
Herald Sun reported:
"It's nice to pay the players well and get big money from television rights and sponsorships, but ultimately you've got to provide a return for the owners or, in this case, the franchises.
"As I understand it, the franchisees are starting to ask questions already.
"You look at the number (cost) for the franchises, somewhere between $70 million and $100 million, and they pay the players on top of that. Explain it to me how they get their return."
The tournament started with lots of hypes and expectations, but just a week has gone yet. So, it would not be fair to give any verdict over the question of its success, but it is true that this kind of concern is coming into existence. Now, let us see if the IPL organizers take any necessary initiative on this regard.
For your kind information, IPL Chairman Lalit Modi has claimed IPL was going to be profitable even from first year.
