Since retuning to court after recovering a wrist injury, India’s highest ranked female tennis player, Sania Mirza is yet to get back her prime form. Following a shocking first round exit from WTA Bank of the West Classic tournament recently, Sania Mirza has slipped two places to 35th in the latest WTA ranking. However, the Hyderabad-born star is pretty much happy being a part of current Asian surge in world tennis.
Though Sania Mirza failed to impress in Wimbledon 2008, China's Zheng Jie and Thailand's Tamarine Tanasugarn carried on the Asian rise in tennis with Zheng Jie becoming first Chinese to play at a grand slam semi final in Wimbledon 2008. Sania Mirza’s doubles ranking has dropped to 20th, even though Sania along with American Bethanie Mattek had reached the quarter final of Wimbledon 2008.
Sania Mirza has recently compared the current Federer-Nadal rivalry with the 80’s classic rivalry between Borg and McEnroe. According to Sania, this kind of rivalry is good for tennis.
